A recent graduate of the federally funded Youthbuild program for at-risk young adults led by Daisy's Resource Center in North Chicago, told Congressman Kirk during her graduation ceremony that her real dream was to study oceanography. Congress Kirk helped arrange a visit to Shedd Aquarium for Maria Arenas, where she spent time with the staff and helped with the marine life.
A federally-funded program called 'Youthbuild' is helping at-risk youth in the 10th District who have problems with addiction. Based in North Chicago and Waukegan, the programs is designed to help young people recover from their addiction and acquire skills to help them return to the job market. Led by North Chicago's Daisy Resource Center, these young people are learning construction and building trade skills. Waukegan's project is getting underway with help from AmeriCorps volunteers.
