U.S. House, 10th District
In the 10th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Mark Kirk
faces a challenge from lawyer/mediator Lee Goodman, a Northbrook
Democrat.
Goodman is running on an anti-war, anti-Bush platform and is
tying most of what he believes is wrong with the Bush administration
to Kirk, who is seeking his third two-year term. It's an understandable
strategy but in this case there's more to Mark Kirk than his support
for George W. Bush.
Kirk , for example, has been a Republican leader for environmental
causes - especially when it comes to local issues such as the
cleanup of Waukegan Harbor or the preservation of Lake Michigan
bluffs once owned by the Navy and facing development.
And Kirk, while voting to go to war in Iraq, now admits that
mistakes were made and information he used to make that vote was
flawed. He called the information that led to the U.S. invading
Iraq was the third worst intelligence failure in American history,
right behind Pearl Harbor and 9/11. He urged the president to
admit those mistakes as well and advocates fixing the problems
in the American intelligence community, which we support.
Finally, Kirk, of Highland Park, is keenly aware of local issues,
something Goodman has not proved. Kirk has secured federal funds
for the double tracking of the North Central commuter railroad
line, for example, and is helping to lead the way for funding
the STAR line - connecting suburbs on the Northwest Tollway from
O'Hare International Airport to Hoffman Estates and then south
to Joliet.
For the 10th Congressional District, which includes southeastern
Lake and northeastern Cook counties, we endorse Mark Kirk. We
believe he is an moderate Republican voice in Congress attuned
to the needs of his district.
